Mounties Seize Drugs, Illegal Smokes From Sussex Area Home

A 47-year-old man has been arrested following a drug investigation at a home in Berwick near Sussex.

Mounties carried out a search warrant at a home on Creek Road yesterday.

Police seized roughly five pounds marijuana, hashish, hash oil, thousands of illegal cigarettes and a quantity of cash.

The man has been released on a promise to appear in Saint John court in July.
 

Green Party Leader Calls Omnibus Bill "Undemocratic"

The Liberal Government under Premier Brian Gallant is being compared unfavourably with the Federal Conservative Government under former Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

Provincial Green Party leader David Coon doesn't like the provincial government's Omnibus bill with several pieces of legislation jammed into one bill.

Coon is critical of proposed changes to binding arbitration requested by municipalities including Saint John. He says the changes favour the employer, angering firefighters and police who gave up their right to strike.

Clash Over Energy East

Premier Brian Gallant and Interim Provincial Conservative leader Bruce Fitch locking horns over the Energy East pipeline.

Fitch says the Premier is responsible, in part, for the project's delay because of agreeing that conditions sought by Ontario and Quebec are reasonable.

Premier Gallant posed a series of questions about what conditions Fitch considers to be unreasonable.

Additional Charges Laid In Online Child Pornography Investigation

A 25 year old Moncton man suspected of sexually exploiting more than 2,000 young people online, is now facing five additional charges.

Those charges include production of child pornography, child luring, and extortion.

The man, whose name cannot be released due to a publication ban, previously pleaded guilty producing child pornography, sexual assault and making child pornography available in connection with another victim.

More Details On Bank Robbery

More details released by City Police after an armed robbery at the Bayview Credit Union on Main Street West yesterday afternoon between 4:30 and 5:00.

A man came into the Credit Union armed with a handgun and left the bank with an undisclosed amount of money. The robber is described as white, possibly in his 30's, between 5'8" and 6'0" feet tall with a slender to medium build.

Layoffs At Canadian Blood Services

Restructuring at Canadian Blood Services has meant 25 layoffs across the country and a reduction in hours for 8 others.

Four of those who will lose their jobs are in Atlantic Canada, two of them in New Brunswick.

Director of Donor Relations Peter Macdonald says they're finding ways of becoming more efficient, "We're not where we want to be, and there are no increases coming in our budget, so when we are able to drive more donors to book their appointments self-serve, it allows us to find some efficiencies within the system."

Daniil Miromanov scored four goals, including an empty-netter, to lead the Acadie-Bathurst Titan to a 6-3 win over the Sea Dogs who still lead their first round playoff series 3 games to 1. Game five is back at Harbour Station tomorrow night at 7.

Victoriaville downed Moncton 4-2 but the Wildcats still lead that "Q" League series, 3 games to 1.

In the NHL, Philadelphia moved ahead of Detroit for the final playoff spot in the East with a 2-1 shootout win over Washington.....Ottawa got by Winnipeg 2-1 and Anaheim beat Calgary 8-3.
